The Sword of Riva Iron-Grip!
This is my second attempt, ever, at making a digital painting.
After making the black sword of Torak I decided on making its counterpart, The sword that Belgarion eventually wielded in his fight against the Dragon God.
There were only a few general descriptions of this weapon in the series so all of the details aside from the orb and fire were my idea.
The descriptive text I had to go off of is as follows;
orb glowing blue, bursting forth sword burst into flames great sword celestial iron massive, two-handed hilt it burst joyously into blue flame, shearing off the rough edges and polishing the sword to mirror brightness. flat bottom
The sword was forged by Riva Irongrip through the instruction of Belgarath. The metal used was described as celestial iron, a meteorite that fell from the heavens and landed on the Isle of wind. Riva was instructed to forge two pieces out of the lumps of metal: A guard and hilt with a flat pommel as one and the sword blade as the other. He was then instructed to simply press them together, as he did the pieces simply clicked in place. Once the orb was placed on the sword it sheared off all rough edges and burned joyously!
I decided to leave the grip a little rough for better traction when using the weapon. The engravings of the wolf, owl and symbol in the middle were not described in the book, I took it upon myself to add those as anyone who has read the story knows they play a great part in the prophecy. I also decided after a while that I would have the stained glass look for the background, as the sword was most prominently displayed in the great halls of the Rivan King. The fire was always described as being blue so I made it blue in the innermost part, blending out to a white. White being the hottest of flames.
Loving the details. The progression of colors on the flame is seamless and the engravings add a nice touch. Do love the orb at the bottom. It blends in well but also grabs attention to itself. Overall, it gives a feeling of power to the sword, and using cool colors, it is amazing how you pulled that off. I wish I could give you more, but I'm no expert. But I shall pass your name on to some good digital painters here (namely ~kdanielss and ~o0gallimaufry0o)
